25, a lesson. Will we learn?
Today marks the 25 anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Nothing to celebrate and all that mourn: the disaster took place 25 years ago but continues to claim victims. Significant tracts of land never be fitted to dwell in them.
between 125,000 and 146,000 square kilometers of land in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine were contaminated at levels that required the evacuation of the population or the imposition of harsh restrictions (that surface is equivalent to the size of Greece or Bangladesh, or almost 5 times the size of the Netherlands). At the time of the accident, 7 million people (including 3 million children) lived in these areas. Of these, only about 350,000 were resettled or left the area.
Twenty-five years after the Chernobyl nuclear accident, Fukushima happens. In the latter, the situation is still not controlled, month and a half after the start of the accident and is still emitting radioactivity into the environment: Fukushima is, repeating a phrase that has already made a fortune, a Chernobyl in slow motion. Hundreds of thousands of people affected by radiation.
The Japanese government should evacuate populations that are 40 kms. away from the nuclear plant. The release of radioactive Cesium-137 has already been very significant. Given its half-life of 30 years, will spend more than a century before that pollution levels will decrease significantly. As in Chernobyl.
